I just saw the news today that noted biographer William Manchester has passed away.
I must say I loved his first 2 books about Winston Churchill and I had been waiting years for the 3rd book to be released.
The final major effort in Mr. Manchester's literary career was the Churchill trilogy, which began to emerge in 1983. The first volume was subtitled "Visions of Glory, 1874-1932." It was followed by "Alone, 1932-1940." Last week Little, Brown said Mr. Manchester had signed an agreement with Paul Reid, a writer for The Palm Beach Post who has written about Mr. Manchester, to finish Volume 3. Publication is scheduled for 2007, the publisher said.
I am now wondering how much of the third book will be Manchester's work and how much will be Reid's work, but only time will tell. I have not read any of the other biographies although I may consider the MacArthur book eventually. I'm almost positive I won't read the Kennedy books. Over the years I have become so tired of hearing about the Kennedys that it wouldn't matter if it was the best book ever written, I don't want to see it.
I am very happy that he took the time to write about Churchill. For that I will always remember him. May he rest in peace.
